Many tech companies have been using the “dogfooding”, which comes from the saying “eating your own dog food”, to force their employees to use their own products. Now it comes to Facebook.

If you are using Facebook for iOS, you may feel it is well designed with many powerful features yet very easy to use. Facebook team has been updating the iOS client app frequently with bugs fixed and more new features. It is a great app for iPhone, iPad, iPod users.

On the contrary, Facebook for Android is really below average. Facebook management has realized this issue and believes that the only way employees will take fixing it seriously is if they have to deal with its issues on daily basis. Thus dogfooding comes to Facebook.

Unfortunately the Facebook has been filtered by the Chinese Great Wall. So basically Chinese users will not be able to use either of them, Facebook for iOS or Android, without a proxy service.

Sailfish to china

It has been a while since the divorce between Nokia and Meego, the mobile OS for Nokia smartphones. I have previewed the new mobile OS called Sailfish developed by the same company who built Meego for Nokia before.

I first heard Meego when I was trying to get myself a new mobile last year. It is not a popular mobile system. Nokia is a well known brand in China. It has been in Chinese cellphone market for many years, earlier than many others brands such as the Taiwanese brand HTC, Chinese brand XIAOMI, etc. As far as I can remember about ten years ago, we have these mobile brands in china, Nokia, Motorola, Sang-sung, Konka, Bodao, TCL, etc.

Before the smartphone era, Nokia has been the top cellphone brand in China for long time, in the high end, middle end or low end mobile phone market of China. The mouth to mouth word of Nokia is very nice of this brand. I have heard my friends say how great their Nokia phone works, how they are physically strong, etc.

Nokia has been a great success in china before with their phones before Samsung and Apple. Now the later two cellphone brands are probably much successful than Nokia. Samsung is very well known for beautiful design, appearance and the Android OS in china. Apple is very well known for their high end branch impression, and partially for the iOS and the many apps in App stores.

Many mobile users know Meego because of they know Nokia in china. However it has not been a popular mobile operating system in China, at least not as popular as google Android, Apple iOS, or even the second class OS like Microsoft Windows for phone. Nokia has chosen Microsoft Windows as its smartphone system, this however might not improve its market situation in China, as this OS is not popular at preset China. When I was considering buying a Nokia N serial phone, my friend told me that he is using one which is running on Microsoft Windows for phone and he find the OS is no good. The OS for mobile is really a deal breaker.

However it takes time for the new mobile OS, Windows Phone, to grow. Microsoft has introduced the Surface tablet. We are interested in this new tablet and the new OS.

Nokia’s own Symbian operating system might not good for high-end smartphones, Meego may not be the best choice for Nokia, as they have been proved by their poor performance in the market.

How about Android for Nokia? Samsung has captured the lion’s share in the Android market. Google’s own brand Motorola is also very big. There are many others as well, HTC from Taiwan is an example. If Nokia follow these mobile brands and vendors, would it be too late? Another prominent factor we need to worry about is the long term relationships between the hardware and software. Google is becoming more and more dominant in many fields including the mobile hardware and software, they are likely to impose more and more constricted terms on their contractors or partners over time in terms of what you’re allowed to do and what you’re not. On the other end, Microsoft is eager to expand its business to the mobile market which is huge but competitive at the same time. So Microsoft may work harder to get the business with Nokia. Nokia thus may get better offers and more freedom in future development as well.

Sailfish want to come to China? There is a great cellphone market in china. It can make your business very successful, as the huge market and demand for variety brands and OS systems. Good luck, Sailfish!

I have a non-gmail email account which is receiving Google alerts daily, I do not want to receive these alerts any more.

I tried to log on google with my non-gmail account, but it appears the account has never been associated with any of google service or products thus I can’t log on Google to delete or manage my Google alerts.

I must have set google alerts forwardded from a google email account or non gmail account, as Google allows transfer Google Alerts to non Gmail email address. The problem is I can not remember which email account I used to sign up for the specifc google alerts.

The Alert is an old one, set up about a year ago, whether I set it up using a gmail account or non-Gmail email account I can’t remeber either.

I am not logged in to any Google accounts I have when I try to remove the Alert. It just tells me I have no Alerts.

It is a serious mechanical problem with the Google’s Alert engine, because Google should allow users to remove or disable the alerts in each alert email they send, even the email recipient does not have the google account login or simply forget which account they signed up for the alerts.

Google alerts transfer is very useful, it is designed for users’ convenience. However if google provides no way to cancel a alerts transfer, it is REALLY annoying!!

We live in an increasingly wireless world. More and more wireless applications for mobile devices are available nowadays.

If you are an Apple user, you may find it is disturbing to move around your files and data among different iOS devices. You need to have a computer with iTunes installed and a USB cable. What do you do if you happen to be somewhere without a computer or USB cable? Now if you have Wifi Transfer App on your iOS devices, you will find it becomes surprisingly easy to send photos and videos from an iOS device to another. Best of all, it’s wireless, no computer, iTunes or USB cable required.

iphone ipad photo wifi transfer appTo get started, you simply go to get the Wifi Transfer App from the App Store, install the app on your iDevice.

Start the transfer app on your iOS device, you will find two options Send and Receive. First, you can tab Send from the source device, it could be an iPhone, iPod Touch, or iPad. Second, go to the destination iOS device, an iPhone, iPad or iPod Touch, tab the Receive. Both the two iOS devices can then connected with each other through Wifi network. You can easily browse through the photo library and download the photos/videos you like from the other iDevice.

Curiously, however, the app requires you to enable Location Service. What you want to do is to get your photos/videos copied over to another iOS device, why the Wifi transfer app needs to use my Location Service on both the iOS devices? The answer is simple it is because it has to access the photo library on the iOS device. Anytime an iOS app requires access to location information, Apple requires the developers to ask permission from the user.

You can do quite a bit more with the Wifi transfer app. You can also send photos from iPhone to computer & Vice Versa, from iPad to Computer & Vice Versa. It is ideal for those times when you need to free up some space on your iOS devices, you can transfer some photos and videos to your computer.
